Anne Meredith McDermott inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at Wofford College

Anne Meredith McDermott, a member of the class of 2017, was accorded Wofford College's highest academic honor Tuesday, May 9, when she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.

McDermott is majoring in biology. She has served the Spartanburg community through her work with the Arcadia Volunteer Corps and as the director of Nutrition Now. She participated in summer research projects at the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Iowa. During a semester abroad in London McDermott focused on studying public health at Oxford University and completed a service learning practicum at a breast cancer charity in London, and at public health clinics in Kingston, Jamaica. A candidate for a bachelor of science degree, McDermott has joined the Teach for America 2017 Corps to teach high school biology in Connecticut. She then plans to enroll in medical school..

Thirty-seven Wofford College students and recent graduates were initiated as members-in-course during the ceremony that marked the 76th anniversary of Phi Beta Kappa at Wofford.

Students are normally considered for election to Phi Beta Kappa at Wofford after they have earned 100 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 3.600. Election is not automatic. Resident members of the chapter consider scholarship, character, intellectual curiosity, creative thinking, diversity of academic interests and pursuits, and other factors in the election process The chapter may elect only 10 percent of a graduating class in any year.
