John William McAlhany Awarded Wofford College Scholarship

2012 Feb 27

John William McAlhany, a senior at Greenwood High School, has been awarded a Benjamin Wofford Scholarship at Wofford College. McAlhany is a member of the class of 2016 and the child of Johnny and Pam McAlhany of Greenwood. S.C., (29649).

The Benjamin Wofford Scholarships are named in memory of the founder of the college. These scholarships are awarded annually to male students nominated by their high schools and selected by Wofford College as possessing outstanding qualities of scholarship, leadership and character.

Ninety percent of Wofford's enrolled students receive approximately $32 million in scholarships, grants and loans each year. Each of the endowed scholarship funds requires that recipients demonstrate outstanding character, academic achievement, and potential for contribution to society; some have additional requirements for eligibility.

Wofford College, established in 1854, is an independent liberal arts college of 1,550 students in Spartanburg, S.C. Wofford ranks 2nd nationally in the percentage of undergraduates receiving credit for study abroad. Home to one of the nation's 280 Phi Beta Kappa chapters, Wofford's historic 170-acre campus is recognized as a national arboretum. Affiliated with the United Methodist Church, the college is committed to quintessential undergraduate education within the context of values-based inquiry.
