Katherine Smith receives award during Honors Day ceremonies at Wofford College

Wofford College senior Katherine Lacy Smith was recognized on May 3 during Honors Day ceremonies when she received the James A. Chiles Award, the department award for German, and the departmental award for art history.

A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Smith is majoring in art history and German. She has served as assistant to both the Department of Art History and the Department of Foreign Languages. She also is a member of Delta Phi Alpha, the German Honor Society; Kappa Alpha Theta, where she was recruitment chair; and the Rotaract Club, where she was vice president. After graduation, she plans to apply to graduate programs in art history and German.

The late James A. Chiles was professor of German from 1914 to 1947. While at Wofford, he wrote a widely adopted German textbook and founded the national German honor society Delta Phi Alpha.

The academic major awards are made by the faculty to seniors recommended by the major departments on the basis of academic achievement, character and intellectual promise. Some of the awards are named in honor of persons who have made significant contributions to the intellectual life of the college.
