Philip Matthew Coffey inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at Wofford College

Philip Matthew Coffey was accorded Wofford College's highest academic honor Thursday, May 1, when he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Parent(s)/Guardian: Joy Coffey, Spartanburg, S.C., 29301.

Coffey, a member of the class of 2014, is majoring in biology with concentrations in computational science and medical humanities. Coffey was a Daniel Finalist Scholar, a Papadopoulos Scholar and a Palmetto Fellow. He has served as chair of the Wofford Athletics and Recreation committee and as a camera and replay operator for the Wofford athletics department. Pursing his interest in global health, he studied in Chile during Interim 2012 and for a semester at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad in the fall of 2012. He also completed research internships with Northeast Ohio Medical University and The Translational Genomics Research Institute. A candidate for a bachelor of science degree, Coffee plans to attend medical school in preparation for a career in cardiothoracic or orthopedic surgery..

Thirty-four Wofford College students and recent graduates were initiated as members-in-course during the ceremony that marked the 73nd anniversary of Phi Beta Kappa at Wofford.

Wofford College, established in 1854, is an independent liberal arts college of 1,650 students in Spartanburg, S.C. Wofford ranks 7th nationally in the percentage of undergraduates receiving credit for study abroad. Home to one of the nation's 280 Phi Beta Kappa chapters, Wofford's historic 170-acre campus is recognized as a national arboretum. Wofford is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
