Simone Elizabeth Worthy inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at Wofford College

Simone Elizabeth Worthy, a member of the class of 2016, was accorded Wofford College's highest academic honor Tuesday, May 3, when she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.

Worthy graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in January 2016 with a major in Chinese and minors in economics and government. She was the recipient of several scholarships, a member of Terrier Dynasty, served in Transitions as a peer mentor and tutored students in the STARTTALK Chinese language program. She developed her Chinese language proficiency through summer study at Middlebury College in 2013. She represented Wofford in the Palmetto Chinese Star Contest in 2014 placing second in language proficiency. In 2015, she received a CLS Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State for summer study at Beijing Language and Culture University in Beijing, China. Since graduation Worthy has served as a research intern at the American Foreign Policy Council. Planning a career in law, she will enter the University of Pennsylvania's law school in fall 2016..

Thirty-six Wofford College students and recent graduates were initiated as members-in-course during the ceremony that marked the 75th anniversary of Phi Beta Kappa at Wofford.

Students are normally considered for election to Phi Beta Kappa at Wofford after they have earned 100 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 3.600. Election is not automatic. Resident members of the chapter consider scholarship, character, intellectual curiosity, creative thinking, diversity of academic interests and pursuits, and other factors in the election process The chapter may elect only 10 percent of a graduating class in any year.
