Spencer Lee Thomas inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at Wofford College

Spencer Lee Thomas, a member of the class of 2017, was accorded Wofford College's highest academic honor Tuesday, May 9, when he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.

Thomas is majoring in English. He is a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and Sigma Tau Delta English honor society. He also serves the Southern Guards Army ROTC Battalion as the battalion commander. Recognized as the top-rated senior cadet in military science, he is a distinguished Military Graduate. He has completed Cadet Troop Leader Training at Fort Bragg as well as cultural understanding and language proficiency deployment in Albania. Thomas also studied English and classics at Trinity College, Dublin. A candidate for a bachelor of arts degree, Thomas will commission as a second lieutenant and begin an active duty career in the United States Army Engineer Corps..

Thirty-seven Wofford College students and recent graduates were initiated as members-in-course during the ceremony that marked the 76th anniversary of Phi Beta Kappa at Wofford.

Students are normally considered for election to Phi Beta Kappa at Wofford after they have earned 100 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 3.600. Election is not automatic. Resident members of the chapter consider scholarship, character, intellectual curiosity, creative thinking, diversity of academic interests and pursuits, and other factors in the election process The chapter may elect only 10 percent of a graduating class in any year.
